In voice lessons, I talk about how we can raise our tolerance for “failure”, how we can have more self-compassion and judge ourselves less harshly, how we can be worthy and also a work in progress simultaneously, how we can take some pressure off of ourselves, how we can celebrate our tiny tiny wins, and so much more. I ask YOU those questions in our lesson, and when I close my laptop for the day, I ask MYSELF those questions about my own life and work.

If I’m being tooooootally honest, this year challenged me with its fair share of imposter syndrome, burnout, pivoting, internal pressure, & disappointment (I have a feeling that you might relate…). I’ve learned a lot of lessons this year that continue to shape who I am, what I value in my life, & how I can live accordingly.

This year, I raised my tolerance for “failure”, looked my self-judgement straight in the face, grew as a person, artist, and business owner, and celebrated lots of tiny tiny wins. I can say the same for many of my students and for that I am so proud and grateful to be a part of your journeys.

I’m a big believer that voice lessons are a microcosm of life as a whole and that the things we work on in the voice studio can transcend to our life beyond of those four walls. In voice lessons, I talk about how we can raise our tolerance for “failure”, how we can have more self-compassion and judge ourselves less harshly, how we can be worthy and also a work in progress simultaneously, how we can take some pressure off of ourselves, how we can celebrate our tiny tiny wins, and so much more. I’m Lauren Urso Gray, I’m a voice teacher and performer based in Dallas, TX and I own Your Authentic Voice!

I’m on a mission to help singers know, love, and cultivate their voice through virtual and in-person voice lesson at my Dallas studio.

I started Your Authentic Voice in the beginning of 2021 after teaching voice for 5 years prior and seeing a need for mental health-aware voice exploration.

One of my favorite things to do in my voice practice is to balance.

And not, like, perfect yogi tree pose balance. But messy, “I’m intentionally going to make this hard for myself and let myself fall” kind of balance.

Why?

1. It’s great to get my body engaged when I sing
2. It makes me giggle when I struggle to keep myself upright
3. It forces me to practice intentional “failure” to release the power that concept has over me

I’m trying to stop avoiding failure, messiness, and mistakes. And, when I face them head on, they actually aren’t as big, bad, and scary as I imagined them to be. Intentionally exposing myself to potential “failure” means that I can’t lose. Doing the thing IS winning.

Suck it, perfectionism.

→ the divorce papers on the kitchen table Jamie and I bought together on our first anniversary (heartbreak, shock, bitterness)

→ our dog sleeping soundly on the kitchen rug (sad, abandoned)

→ our wedding photo in a frame my best friend gave us as a wedding gift (nostalgia, gratitude, hope)

→ a picture of his sister who hated me on the fridge that he promised he’d fix but never did (annoyed, enraged)

The point is, there’s no object too random or weird. Just pick a few that will stir up some emotions and get you thinking outside of your body and about the character’s world.

This past week, a singer in my studio said “I know it’s overdone, but I want to sing X today.”

& I said “….overdone?! I haven’t heard this song in YEARS! I love this song and I can’t wait to work on it with you!”

The theatre industry is sooooo obsessed with this “overdone” label, that we’re creating unnecessary shame for ourselves, our peers, our students, instead of focusing on what really matters ↓

I’m about to get 🌶️ spicyyyyy 🌶️

Wanna know a secret? I don’t prioritize my performing career.

In fact, here are 3 things I prioritize over my performing career -
1️⃣ My well-being and mental health
2️⃣ My marriage
3️⃣ My financial stability and quality of life

AND YET - I still have a fulfilling performing career and make money doing it.

My journey hasn’t always been an upward-trending line. Four years ago, I was an artist working towards a career on Broadway in NYC, but really miserable doing it. I hated my day to day life and felt financially, emotionally, mentally, and physically drained. I was doing everything I was told to do to “show up” and “work hard,” I never even noticed I was hurting myself in the process until later.

I hit a breaking point in 2019 and decided to move to Dallas to regroup and find myself and my spark again. It wasn’t an overnight switch, but rather a slow path toward another artistic calling and a life of performing on my own terms.

I wish I knew then what I know now, but I hold my past self with love and empathy ♥️ I was simply doing what was encouraged and modeled to me by authority figures in the industry. Amidst the unhealthy hustle culture messaging that is still pervasive in our industry, I want to start a different conversation. I don’t claim to have all of the answers, but I do know that there is another way. One where we prioritize our needs, have agency over our life, and pursue our dreams with balance, perspective, and self-compassion.

You don’t have to do it my way. Just like you don’t have to do it their way. You can do it YOUR way. 🫶

My journey hasn’t always been an upward-trending line. Four years ago, I was an artist working towards a career on Broadway in NYC, but really miserable doing it. I hated my day to day life and felt financially, emotionally, mentally, and physically drained. I was doing everything I was told to do to “show up” and “work hard,” I never even noticed I was hurting myself in the process until later.

I hit a breaking point in 2019 and decided to move to Dallas to regroup and find myself and my spark again. It wasn’t an overnight switch, but rather a slow path toward another artistic calling and a life of performing on my own terms.

I wish I knew then what I know now, but I hold my past self with love and empathy ♥️ I was simply doing what was encouraged and modeled to me by authority figures in the industry. Amidst the unhealthy hustle culture messaging that is still pervasive in our industry, I want to start a different conversation. I don’t claim to have all of the answers, but I do know that there is another way. One where we prioritize our needs, have agency over our life, and pursue our dreams with balance, perspective, and self-compassion.

You don’t have to do it my way. Just like you don’t have to do it their way. You can do it YOUR way. 🫶

❤️‍🔥 THERAPY!!! Singing can be therapeutic, but it isn’t therapy. In fact, the often uncertain, rejection-filled, highly-critical world of performing can perpetuate negative self-image and mental health struggles. Therapy gives me tools to manage stress, rejection, imposter syndrome, negative self-talk, grief, and anxiety (just to name a few) and it makes me a better human in all aspects of my life. While I don’t consider therapy a “radical” practice (actually, quite the opposite), therapy does challenge my deeply-held beliefs and feelings about myself and the world and THAT is radical.

❤️‍🔥 The environment I’m in and people I’m around have a massive impact on my mental health. That’s why I only work with people and theater companies that I feel respected and valued by. This is a radical rejection of the common messaging that we should be grateful for any and all work and build our resume by any means necessary.

❤️‍🔥 I pursue work that genuinely fulfills me and release the obligation to do work that I’m not into, regardless of what “everyone else” is doing.

Just a typical week of voice lessons ♥️

As a voice teacher, I hear a mix of good and bad every day.

I hear the tough stuff - the horror stories about ghosts of toxic educational environments past & the things you’re going through outside of your voice lessons. It reminds me that I have an immensely important job of holding space & building up. It reminds me that the impact of my words reach beyond this present moment and that I have a duty to leave a positive impact on the artists I work with.

& I hear the good stuff - the hoots and hollers as you do the thing you’ve never been able to do before, the thank yous, the happy tears, the *shocked face because you can’t believe you did the thing*. I listen to beautiful singing all day long and I can honestly tell you my favorite sounds are the ones coming out of your mouth saying nice things about yourself and your singing experience and THAT is saying something!

My favorite warm-up tips 💌

1. START SLOW - Start slower than you think you should and then go ~even~ slower. Here are some ideas - Start with a breathing-only exercise. Start with a speaking exercise. Start with the most basic singing exercise you can think of.

2. FOCUS YOUR MIND - Take 30 seconds to focus on the task at hand and put aside distractions. Tune into your breathing and your body. Choose an affirmation to set the tone. Light a candle to set the mood even!!

3. SET CLEAR GOALS - Set clear, SMALL goals. I know you’re an overachiever and want to ~win~ vocal warm ups, but getting jumbled up with too many thoughts and overcorrections is a fast track to frustration. Set a baby goal like “I want to feel engaged to my body” or “I want to smile and have fun” or “I want to feel my air freely flowing through my instrument”

4. ENGAGE CRITICAL THINKING - Start tuning into what’s helping you today and why. What feels good? What would you like more or less of? What would help your voice the most today?

5. DON’T WAIT TO FEEL MOTIVATED - Schedule a 10-minute date in your calendar and stick to it. Set a timer and just start. Don’t wait to “feel like it”.

Give yourself ✨grace✨

I start every lesson with a quick check-in and sometimes a student will say

- I barely slept last night.
- I went to a concert last night and my voice is tired.
- My allergies are killing me.
- I got some bad news today so I’m in a funk.

Or any other factors that might affect your voice, your energy, or your mood.

But then, when we start to sing it’s common for a singer to get frustrated that things aren’t feeling like they usually do or a certain skill is harder today than usual.

I invite you to give yourself grace and take into consideration alllll the factors that might be contributing to your singing today.

❤️‍🔥Your voice doesn’t suck today, you’re just tired.
❤️‍🔥You’re not untalented, you just have allergies.
❤️‍🔥You haven’t forgotten how to sing, it’s just an off day.

Give yourself ✨grace✨

I start every lesson with a quick check-in and sometimes a student will say

- I barely slept last night.
- I went to a concert last night and my voice is tired.
- My allergies are killing me.
- I got some bad news today so I’m in a funk.

Or any other factors that might affect your voice, your energy, or your mood.

But then, when we start to sing it’s common for a singer to get frustrated that things aren’t feeling like they usually do or a certain skill is harder today than usual.

I invite you to give yourself grace and take into consideration alllll the factors that might be contributing to your singing today.

❤️‍🔥Your voice doesn’t suck today, you’re just tired.
❤️‍🔥You’re not untalented, you just have allergies.
❤️‍🔥You haven’t forgotten how to sing, it’s just an off day.

Your voice is still worthy of love on an off day.

The hard truth about the journey to uncovering a free voice? It’s messy.

Don’t get me wrong, sometimes relieving physical tension in our singing can be an immediate positive change and relief.

But sometimes? Sometimes it creates instability (at first!!). This is where a lot of singers back out and revert to their old patterns instead of working through these new sensations. But you? YOU know that this is all part of the process of uncovering your authentic voice (Go, bestie! Go, bestie! Go! 📣)

Think of tension as a security blanket for your voice. Your voice might not be too happy at first when you take it away. BUT, if you can be patient during this step in the process, you will come out the other side with freer, easier, more comfortable, and more fulfilling singing.
