I get it ❤️‍🩹

Once upon a time, you loved to sing - when you were younger, maybe earlier in your career, maybe before a certain experience, or maybe even when you were a child.

But then, you lost the joy.

Somewhere along the way to achieving your dreams of performing, you fell out of love with it altogether. Maybe you had a negative experience in a college program, or a theatre contract, or got tired of feeling unseen and undervalued in the audition room.

But that doesn’t have to be the end of the story.

You can find that joy again.
You can reclaim your voice.
You can love singing again.
You can have fun singing and performing again.
You can feel like a singer again.

You just need space to build a relationship with your voice again. A space that’s free of judgement and pressure to be perfect. A space that you feel truly seen in. A space that honors all of you - mind, body, and voice.

So that singing becomes joyful, cathartic, simple, and healing again.

Her career highlights included
- shrinking myself for fear of judgement or doing the “wrong” thing
- sucking all the fun out of my (messy!) creative process
- making me second guess everything from my singing to my big dreams
- holding back when everything in me said to go for it

I’m replacing her “role” in my “company” with someone else — Little Me.

Little Me’s resume includes
- making mud soup in the backyard in CoolWhip containers
- choreographing dances in her bedroom wayyyy past bedtime
- riding her bike around the neighborhood and singing into the wind
- pursuing my passions and dreams without a freakin’ care in the world

She doesn’t protect my image.
She protects my aliveness.

I’m a big believer that voice lessons are a microcosm of life as a whole and that the things we work on in the voice studio can transcend to our life beyond of those four walls. In voice lessons, I talk about how we can raise our tolerance for “failure”, how we can have more self-compassion and judge ourselves less harshly, how we can be worthy and also a work in progress simultaneously, how we can take some pressure off of ourselves, how we can celebrate our tiny tiny wins, and so much more. I ask YOU those questions in our lesson, and when I close my laptop for the day, I ask MYSELF those questions about my own life and work.

If I’m being tooooootally honest, this year challenged me with its fair share of imposter syndrome, burnout, pivoting, internal pressure, & disappointment (I have a feeling that you might relate…). I’ve learned a lot of lessons this year that continue to shape who I am, what I value in my life, & how I can live accordingly.

This year, I raised my tolerance for “failure”, looked my self-judgement straight in the face, grew as a person, artist, and business owner, and celebrated lots of tiny tiny wins. I can say the same for many of my students and for that I am so proud and grateful to be a part of your journeys.

This past year I had some lofty goals for Lauren Urso Gray, Owner & Founder of Your Authentic Voice. This next year, I have some big goals for Lauren, future dog mom (!!!!!!).

One of my favorite things to do in my voice practice is to balance.

And not, like, perfect yogi tree pose balance. But messy, “I’m intentionally going to make this hard for myself and let myself fall” kind of balance.

Why?

1. It’s great to get my body engaged when I sing
2. It makes me giggle when I struggle to keep myself upright
3. It forces me to practice intentional “failure” to release the power that concept has over me

I’m trying to stop avoiding failure, messiness, and mistakes. And, when I face them head on, they actually aren’t as big, bad, and scary as I imagined them to be. Intentionally exposing myself to potential “failure” means that I can’t lose. Doing the thing IS winning.

Suck it, perfectionism.
